About this Ministry:

The Legion of Mary is the largest organization of lay people in the Catholic Church, with well over a million active members in every country in the world. In 1971 the Legion celebrated its 50th anniversary. It has been active in the United States since 1931 and in Houston since 1947. In this world-wide organization of Catholics, men and women offer their services to their pastor to aid him in performing Spiritual Works in the parish.

Our Objectives:

The Legion of Mary makes its members better Christians by a balanced program of prayer and action. They do this by the personal sanctification of its members, who by taking Mary as their model, endeavor to imitate her virtues- especially her Faith, Charity, and Humility. The Legion helps to spread devotion to Mary, primarily by teaching and providing the Rosary to as many people as possible. The Legion also performs Apostolic Works. These works include evangelization and parish visits, teaching and helping with RCIA and Real Life classes, promoting Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, promoting Mass attendance and the joining of Catholic Associations and Ministries, visiting nursing home and hospital and prison residents, visiting grieving families, distribution of Catholic literature and materials, etc. By performing these duties as soldiers of Christ, the Legion of Mary’s members fulfill the obligations incurred by everyone through the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Who can belong?

Any devout Catholic can join after a three month probation devised to see how works and family obligations mesh with the tried and proven format of the Legion System. You can choose to be an active member, or an auxiliary praying member.

The group meets in OLPH School teacher's lounge when Lay Formation Classes are in session. For more information contact Mary Langley at 361-853-7069.
